How to create a Google Business Profile in India, step by step

GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE · 18 Sept 2026 · 9 MIN READ

A Google Business Profile is the box that appears on the right side of Google when someone searches your business name, and the pin that appears on Maps when someone searches your service. It is free, Google has never charged for it, and for most small businesses in India it brings more calls than a website does.

It is also the thing most owners set up in ten minutes and never open again. This guide covers the whole setup properly — including the video verification that stops a lot of people, and the four fields that decide whether you ever show up in searches at all.

What to keep ready before you start

  • A Google account you will still control in five years. Use a business Gmail, not a staff member’s personal one.
  • Your business name exactly as it is written on your signboard.
  • The full address with pincode, or the list of areas you travel to.
  • A phone number that will not change.
  • Six to ten photos: the shopfront with the board visible, the entrance, the inside, your work, and you or your team.
  • Something that proves you run the business — a utility bill, rent agreement, GST certificate, letterhead, or the keys to the shutter.

Step 1 — Start the profile

Go to google.com/business and sign in. Type your business name. If Google already shows a listing with your name and address, it means someone created it earlier, or Google generated it from public data — in that case click it and choose Claim this business instead of making a new one. Creating a second listing for a business that already has one is the fastest way to get both suspended.

Step 2 — The business name (where most people go wrong)

Enter the name on your board and stop there. No city, no service, no "best", no "no.1". Google’s naming policy allows only your real-world name, and adding keywords to rank better is the single most common cause of suspension we see in India.

"Wadke Associates" is fine. "Wadke Associates Best Interior Designer Andheri West" is a suspension waiting to happen.

It does not even work. Google decides what you rank for from your category and your services, not from your name.

Step 3 — The primary category

This is the most important field on the whole profile. Your primary category is what tells Google which searches you are allowed to appear for. A skin clinic listed under "Doctor" instead of "Dermatologist" simply will not show up when someone searches for a dermatologist nearby.

How to pick it: open Google Maps, search the exact phrase a customer would type, and look at the three businesses ranked above you. Their category is written under their name. Use the one that matches you most precisely — the narrower the better. Then add up to nine secondary categories for the other things you do.

Step 4 — Address, or service area

If customers come to you, enter the address and drop the map pin on the actual door, not the middle of the building block. If you go to the customer, enter the address for verification and then tick the option to hide it, and list the areas, localities or pincodes you cover. Do not list half of Mumbai — Google treats an unrealistically wide service area as a quality signal against you.

Step 5 — Phone, website and hours

Use a number that a person actually answers. A landline nobody picks up costs you more than no number at all. If you have no website yet, leave it blank for now rather than linking a Facebook page — and see our guide on making a small business website when you are ready.

Fill the hours honestly, including the day you are closed, and come back to add holiday hours before every festival. A profile that says "Open 24 hours" when it is not gets you one-star reviews from people who turned up at 11pm.

Step 6 — Verification

In India, most new listings now get video verification. You record one continuous video on your phone, without stopping or editing, that shows four things in order:

  • Location — the street, a nearby shop or landmark, then your signboard with the name readable.
  • Proof it is a real business — walk in through the door and show the inside: the chairs, the stock, the machines, the counter.
  • Your equipment — the tools of the trade. A salon shows the styling station, a clinic shows the treatment room, an electrician shows the van and the tool bag.
  • Proof you manage it — open the billing software or cash counter, or show a utility bill, GST certificate or letterhead with the business name on it.

Practical tips: record in daylight, keep the phone steady and do not stop the recording between the four parts — a cut video gets rejected. Two to five minutes is enough. If it is rejected, you can record it again; there is no limit and no charge.

Some businesses are still offered a postcard, a phone call or an email link instead. If you get that option, take it — it is faster.

Step 7 — The part almost everybody skips

Verification gets you on the map. It does not get you calls. What does is filling the profile properly, and this is where almost every listing we audit falls down:

  • Description — 750 characters. Write what you do, for whom, in which areas, in plain language. Include the words customers actually use.
  • Services — add every service as its own entry, each with a short description. Most listings we check have this section completely empty, which is like a menu with no dishes on it.
  • Products — if you sell things, add them with photos and prices.
  • Attributes — wheelchair access, parking, women-led, online appointments, UPI accepted. These become filters customers use.
  • Photos — a logo, a cover, and at least ten real photos. Profiles with photos get noticeably more clicks than those without, and stock images are obvious.
  • Buttons — add the call, WhatsApp, booking or menu buttons that apply to you.
  • Posts — one every week or two keeps the profile looking alive. Just never put a phone number in the post text.

The four mistakes we see on nearly every listing

How long the whole thing takes

Setup is about forty minutes if your photos are ready. Verification is anywhere from a day to two weeks. Filling the profile properly — description, services, products, attributes, photos — is another two hours, and it is the two hours that actually decides whether you appear in searches.

If you would rather have someone check what is already there, our free 15-point listing check reports back on all of this for your listing specifically, within a day, and costs nothing. If the report says a one-time repair is all you need, we will say that instead of selling you a monthly plan.

Questions people ask about this

Is creating a Google Business Profile free?

Yes, completely. Creating the profile, verifying it, adding photos, posting and replying to reviews all cost nothing, and Google has never charged for a listing. If someone calls saying your listing will be removed unless you pay, it is a scam — those calls are common in India and none of them are from Google.

Can I create a Google Business Profile without a shop address?

Yes. If you go to the customer — an electrician, a tutor, a photographer, a designer — you register as a service-area business. You still enter your address during setup because Google needs it for verification, but you tick the option to hide it and instead list the areas or pincodes you serve. Your home address then never appears publicly.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take in India?

Video verification is usually reviewed within a few days, sometimes the same day. Postcard verification, where it is still offered, takes about two weeks. If a video is rejected you can record another one; there is no limit and no fee.

Can two businesses use the same address?

Yes, if they are genuinely separate businesses with separate names, phone numbers and categories — a salon and a tailor in the same building, for example. What gets flagged is the same business listed twice, or a listing created at an address where nothing of that kind operates.

What is the most common reason a new listing gets suspended?

Putting keywords in the business name. "Sharma Interiors Best Interior Designer in Andheri" will be suspended; "Sharma Interiors" will not. Google requires the name on your board, nothing more. We wrote about the other causes in our guide to suspended listings.
